(Google pictures used in this thread, or pictures from our admin) Quite often pet stores are selling plants as aquatic that really are not. Buying these plants and putting them into your aquarium often sees them dead within months. We all know we have to clean out fish waste, but decomposing plant matter also fouls the water in our tanks. The following plants are better off avoided. Mondo Gr Ophiopogon jubaran Purple Waffle Hemigraphis exotica Aluminum Plant Pilea sp. White (or Pink) Butterfly Plant Syngonium podophyllum Peace Lily Spathiphyllum Dragon tree Dracaena sp. Cordyline sp. Japanese rush Acorus gramineus Siam lily Chlorophytum bichetii Umbrella fern, peacock fern Selaginella wildenowii (this is a moss) Borneo Fern Trichomanes javanicum Umbrella plant Cyperus alternifolius Hairgr Eleocharis spp. Spider Plant Chlorophytum comosum The plant Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana), can be used with caution and you should make sure its leaves are out of water.
Many types of anubias cannot remain submerged. Always check the type of anubias before bying it.

Mondo gr in the aquarium. This plant may survive for awhile submerged, but it will not flourish and will eventually die. This is how Mondo Gr is meant to be grown.

This is a Butterfly Plant in an aquarium. I can tell you from personal experience that it will not survive under water for more than a couple of months. Although it does very well in my vivarium that has very wet soil. Butterfly Plants come in a variety of colours and some patterns. I don't blame people for wanting these colours in their tanks. This is how the Butterfly Plant should be grown.

Peace Lily. This is how they should be grown. I know they do not do well submerged. Mine survived for over a year, but never grew at all. It lost one leaf at a time until they were all gone.

Dragon Tree. This is how it should be grown. They can actually grow into humongous trees and live for thousands of years in the right conditions. They really do like their soil to dry out between waterings.

TO grow hairgr submerged, you need bright light, co2 injections and fertilizers. More work than I am willing to put in! Hairgr prefers to frow emersed at the edges of waterways. Hairgr also does well in vivariums.

Spider Plant is an awesome house plant. I have tried it in an aquarium and it didn't last very long. It seems to be doing well in a very moist vivarium though.
