Placed vinyl window screen in the bottom of the basket, though with the sponges, this step is really unnecessary. Placed course black sponge on top of airstone. This sponge came from an existing filter that I cut to size. Placed finer green sponge on top of black sponge. This is just a scrubby from the dollar store, cut to fit.

I had to use some stone (milky quartz in this case, but type doesn't matter) to fill the void left by the airstone so that the sponges would sit even. You can see what I mean by the sponges needed the stones so they sat even. Completed the same steps on the larger side of the basket.

What the whole thing looks like so far. What the airlines look like coming out of the bottom of the basket. Attached both lines to a 'Y' connector piece.

Added used ceramic rings from 2 other filters on top of the sponge. Side view. Added river stones on top of the ceramic rings. These stones are actually precious to me as they were collected and polished by a friend who died. They will be useful here.

Added aquarium gravel on top of the stones. Top view. Made a ridge of the gravel, laid the plants where I wanted them. Then filled the front half with gravel too, and topped it off. This was the finished product. All I had to do was connect the main airline to the other piece of the connector.
