Thanks Savannah for posting this wonderful information to show us how DIY root tabs are made and saving a crap load of money. This is her awesome step-by-step guide to DIY and saving money.
These are the instructions I saw for how and when to use them:
1. Make sure you have an appropriate substrate for using these. Fine sand, or dirt capped with sand. Play sand, blasting sand, are good. Gravel, not so good. If the substrate isn't fine enough, it will leech into the water. Which can cause nitrates to be elevated, and reduces the life and effectiveness.
2. These will feed a 6" circle around them. Place only near planted areas.
3. Put as deep into the substrate as possible - hitting the bottom gl preferably. It can be done with your fingers but that's messier if you have something like a dirt bottomed tank. Fine tongs or tweezers can really be an et when putting them in the substrate and less messy.
4. These will dissolve entirely between 3-6 months. Add more every six months, or when you notice reduced growth after 3-4 months.
This is another tip I saw for use: Squeeze the cap a little under water so it fills up with water before putting it into the substrate.

Look for the Osmocote indoor/outdoor plus formula. Since it isn't season for that I settled for regular, but the Plus is better. What your looking for here is a 15-9-12. But since this isn't the plus formula the measurements are a little different: it's 19-6-12 Get some gelatin gel capsules.. Size "00“ I ordered these off eBay.. Free shipping and here within a few days. Or you could try a local health food store - they usually carry them.

You need a bowl, your fertilizer and your capsules. Pour some in the bowl (they bounce.. I found scooping was easier! And it Comes with a measurement scoop. Fill up the capsules and close 'em. You put it next to the roots of each plant and press into the substrate
