Quick weight conversion chart for tanks and water before adding anything else. This is a chart that shows you what your ammonia reading really is telling you. Combine your pH and temp to find out whether your ammonia reading is dangerous to your fish or not.

Heaters are a must with Betta's as they like temps between 76F - 82F. A gravel washer is essential in keeping your substrate clean and doing water changes. A turkey baster will be helpful in reaching areas a siphon can't. It can also be used to target feed fry. I also use mine to suck up uneaten food.

Indian Almond Leaves (also known as Catappa leaves) are something every Betta owner should have and be using. These leaves are found in their natural environment and provide many benefits. Cinnamon Sticks can be used the same way as IAL (above). I have also used them to anchor Java Fern plants. Shrimp love them. You just need to be sure you are using food grade cinnamon sticks, not decorative. Medicines are a necesary evil sometimes. At the very least you should keep some aquarium salt and epsom salt on hand.
